There are most dentists specializing in one or more types of treatments that are required by different dental patients. If you need some oral health care but you are not sure which specific kind, consider the most common types of dentists available to treat the many issues that can plague the teeth, mouth, and gums.

Family and General Dentist

Family and General dentist is one that handles routine dental work such as cleanings, tests for diseases, and fillings. Usually, general dentists are the first kind of dentist that you will see if you have an oral health problem. They will then refer you to a specialist that has training and experience in a particular area of dentistry so that you can get the specific kind of treatment that you need.

Periodontist

A periodontist is a dental specialist that treats diseases in the gums and jaw. Issues like gingivitis can cause tooth loss and decay if they are not treated properly. A periodontist is commonly able to perform procedures like dental implants, crown lengthening, and gum grafts to make sure that these diseases do not cause problems with your teeth.

Oral Surgeons

An oral surgeon will commonly perform procedures like removing teeth that are very impacted and difficult to extract, or handling a large quantity of extractions at a single time. They can also treat severe disorders of the jaw or other bones in or around the oral cavity.

Orthodontist

They correct problems with teeth that need to be straightened, as well as over and under bites. Orthodontists use specialized equipment like retainers, dental braces, and corrective headgear to make sure that their patients enjoy a smile that is both healthy and attractive.

Pediatric Dentists

A pediatric dentist understands the growth patterns of teeth and gums in young people and will be able to identify and treat oral issues in these types of patients before they grow older. Like general dentists, they will also be able to refer your child to a specialist in case they need care that is beyond the scope of what they can provide.

Once you know what kind of oral care you require, start researching to find a professional in your area.
